McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona. Is McCain out of touch with reality? How many immigrant workers get paid $50 an hour to pick lettuce or any other crop?
Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain's job offer.
"I'll take it!" one man shouted.
McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. "You can't do it, my friends."
Some in the crowd said they didn't appreciate McCain questioning their work ethic.
And what an insult to all workers when he insisted that no American would do such menial labor for a complete season. What American workers WILL NOT DO - and SHOULD NOT DO - is work menial, back-breaking jobs for minimum wage or less so corporations can earn higher profits. People can't even put a roof over their head or food on the table with minimum wage.
It sounds to me like McCain has been hanging out with the Washington elite too long.

McCain is nuts. No one gets fifty bucks an hour to pick anything. They are lucky to get even fifty dollars a day. That's how out of touch he is with what he's talking about. He needs to shut the hell up and go away.
He's lost it!
He has been going off the deep end lately, hasn't he? He had something most pols don't have -- credibility -- and he's squandering it, much like Colin Powell.
Boo... he's been hanging out with Karl Rove too long apparently.
I have to agree with all of you. McCain has definitely lost credibility after these remarks, and he was one of those rare politicians who could reach across the aisle and gain the respect of others.
