On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, "Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day," when Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), rose in protest.A majority of the House GOP has now voted against motherhood. Nice. I've often said Republicans would throw their own mothers under a bus, now I have proof.
"Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote," he announced.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table Tiahrt's request, setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast their votes against mothers.

I just read the article you linked to. As bizarre as the vote-against-mothers was, the entire article was even more so. What a bunch of childish reps the Republicans have sent to Washington. Do they really think they're doing the people's work when they play games like that?
Maybe it's a good sign, tho - that the Republicans are out of ideas and are on the way out.

Can I play the devil's advocate for a moment though? As much as I support Mother's Day, do we really need a symbolic vote in support of it? Surely there are better things that the House ought to be doing--Republican shenanigans aside.
Abi, my life has been so hectic lately that I feel like a hamster on a wheel! I wanted to make the same point about the childish Republicans that you did, but time constrained me.
Anyway, you're right, they treat the process of Democracy like a game, and I think that's part of the reason why they're worried about losing seats. We have very serious issues in this country that need their attention and this is what we get from the Republicans...a bunch of sophomoric, obstructionist behavior. They deserve to be fired.
Kvatch, I see your point - and I agree that that have more important things to consider - but this should have been a no-brainer and only taken up a couple minutes of their time. Either the "family values" party supports motherhood or they don't. Ironically, it was one of their own, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), who was the original sponsor of the bill.
